There are many carriers that have policies called non owned policy they are fairly inexpensive depending on your age and the state you live in.
The policy only covers the liability portion and un insured and under insured if you choose the option of that which is highly recommended.
It will not repair the car that you are driving but cover damages done to others. Depending on your state laws.
Here in Montana the insurance follows the car first then the driver 2nd which means if you were driving a friends car and they gave you permission and you got into an accident their insurance would cover the 1st portion the 2nd would be your non owned policy because they gave  you permission to use their car then permissive use would mean that their insurance liability would be responsible now his insurance may try and get some of the loss covered by your insurance. Check with your state guidelines. Or talk to a local agent.

Yes you can get auto insurance without a vehicle. This is called non owned auto coverage. The use of this type of coverage is primarily for people who had problems with their drivers license and the court is requiring insurance in order to obtain the license back. This does not mean this has to be the issue but is just the primary reason why non owned auto is purchased.

In Montana you get what is called a Non - Owned policy this is for liability only  and will not repair the car that you are driving so if you are driving a friends car and wrecking it cover damage done to others but nothing for your friends car. Now in Montana also the insurance follows the car 1st so if you borrowed your friends car and got into an accident then their insurance covers it first then you insurance 2nd in many cases  their insurance will collect what they paid from your insurance carrier. I have many clients that have this coverage because they can't afford a car. As stated by the last person that usually it is because the courts require it if you have had problems with your driving record. This is not always the case many of my clients have great driving records but own no car.
