   It depends on whether you mean you're about to buy a car in a matter of days.... in that case you would simply need the vin # of the vehicle in order to bind an auto insurance policy.
   
   .......or if you mean you will be going without a car for some time but need auto insurance coverage anyways in the meantime. In that case you will either need a named operators policy or a broad form named drivers policy.
