When a driver joins your household you should call your insurance company right away.  The company will want to know the name and license number.  They will add the name to your list of drivers.  Many companies will do that on line but almost all with take that information over the phone.  If you want to add a driver who is not a part of your household, understand that isn’t necessary.  The insurance covers the car, not just the people named on the policy.

David Pipes is correct on this. When a driver joins your household...call your agent ASAP. Failure to do so could produce some horrible results.

It should be an extremely quick turn around, but the exact amount of time really depends on the insurance company and or insurance agency.
