Most States have a mandatory liability law that means the State prescribes the MINIMUM amount that is required to drive on their highways. This limits varies by State - in Texas, the minimum is $30,000 Bodily Injury per person, $60,000 Bodily Injury per accident and $25,000 Property Damage per accident.

You should carry enough liability protection to protect your assets but only YOU can decide what is enough. If I told you $100,000 and you were sued for $300,000......$100,000 would NOT be enough. Better to HAVE it and not NEED it than to NEED it and not HAVE it.

Other coverages provide protection for your car.

In some States, you can by Uninsured Motorist coverage to protect you from an uninsured motorist.

Some States (Michigan comes to mind) are No Fault states.....and that's a completely different can of worms.
