    Auto insurance provides many benefits that protect you from a wide range of items.

    Liability coverage is perhaps the most important, and of course, it is required by law in almost every area of each state. If you were to have an at-fault accident, you could cause bodily injury and/or property damage that could result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in physical damage, medical expenses and loss of income.

    Auto insurance policies can also provide coverage for the vehicle you are driving and passengers in the vehicle.

    An auto isnurance policy is made up of several different coverages which cover a variety of things.  Keep in mind insurance is also State specific, so the specific coverages that make up an auto policy can vary from state to state.

    In my state (TN), the typical policy is made up of;
    Liability  - pays to the injuries or others subject to your policy limits
    Property Damage - Pays to fix damaged property of other subject to your policy limits
    Medical Payments - paid to you or your passengers subject to the policy limits
    Uninsured/underinsured motorist - covers you if another doesn't have any or enough insurance subject to policy limits
    Comprehensive - subject to the policy deductible, covers things like fire, theft, water, glass or collision with an animal.
    Collision - subject to a policy deductible covers damage to your car when the accident is your fault.

    There are other coverages like rental car expence, towing, etc. that can be added to a policy.  The above is a very brief overview.  Check out http://www.officerins.com/tn-ins/insurance/knowledge-center/auto-insurance-tips/?doing_wp_cron for a pretty indepth explanation of an auto insurance policy.  It is also best to speak with a local independent agent in your area and ask them about speciifcs for your state and your personal needs.
