Many factors can keep your auto insurance rates down. First would be a clean driving record. No moving violations in the last 3 years and no at-fault accidents. The longer your driving record is clean the better as some insurance carriers discount if clean for 5-7 years. Being married tends to lower your rate. Packaging polices such as home and umbrella tend to lower auto insurance rates. If your a student having a 3.0 or better will lower your rate. Making sure there is no gaps in your insurance will also help to get you a better rate depending on the state you reside in. Credit is another factor for some states and of course the type of car you drive, how many miles you drive annually and coverage's you select all are factors in your rate. Insurance coverage is consultative which is why I recommend you talk to a local independent agent who can help find you the right coverage's at the right premium.
