    Rental car companies want to make sure you can pay for damages when you have an accident. You have to show proof of current insurance or purchase temporary insurance through the rental car company. If your personal policy only covers you for liability than you will still have to purchase insurance from the rental car company. You have to have comprehensive and collision coverage in order for the coverage to extend to a rental car.
