You are required to notify your insurance company of a claim in a timely manner.  It is a good rule of thumb to pick up the phone sometime the same day of the incident, if possible, and notify your agent. Most companies have a dedicated claims "hotline" that you can call.  Often it is printed on your insurance ID card which you should have in your glove box in the car.
If you have an accident, first be sure to check the condition of everyone in your car as well as the other then contact the police and, if necessary, Emergency Medical Services. If you have a camera  or a phone with that capability, photograph the scene.  Be sure not to sign any written statements at the accident scene.  The investigating police officer will often prepare a preliminary report and provide you with a copy.  The formal report will be available to you and your insurance adjuster usually within a few days.  Finally, if your car is going to be towed remember to remove all of your personal belongings.
