I can only speak for the company's that I have had personal dealings with, but I believe almost every company uses credit score as part of its rating equation. The credit check that an insurance company does is different from what a financial institution does. The check that the insurance companies perform is called a softcheck which should not affect your scoring with financial institutions to the best of my understanding. Laws change from time to time at both state and federal level. If the credit check is of concern to you, call your local agent and express this and they can advise of the current implecations of an insurance credit check (softpull).

The requirement for a credit check is a feature of plans written in particular states.  Some states, such as California, do not have that requirement.  Insurance actuaries have mountains of statistics and have found some items to be significant in predicting claims.  That is why some states have a credit check.  Apparently, bad credit indicates a tendency to have claims.
