The cheapest auto insurance is always the policy you have in place when you have a claim.  If that policy pays to the fullest extent possible, it is a great policy.  If it falls short because you have selected limits that are too low, it is better than nothing.  In any case it will be better than the policy that you didn’t buy.  There is so much said about price that it fogs the real issue.  You need to have the correct limits.  You are most likely to get the advice you require from a trusted insurance agent.

Keeping in mind that cheap is not necessarily the best should you ever need it, I think that one general rule of thumb is that if you are a newly licensed young driver, it will more than likely be less costly to be added to your parent's auto policy as opposed to having your own.  If however, you are going to be purchasing your own car and registering it in your own name, it would be beneficial to talk to your parent's Insurance Professional about setting up a policy with the same company they have.  In many cases you will still qualify for multi-vehicle and multi-policy discounts which will save you money.
