Auto insurance is mandatory in states to protect those driving and thier personal property, it is also to protect you.  Let's say I accidentaly hit you at an intersection and total your $40,000 car.  If I do not have auto insurance with Liability then fixing or replacing your auto would be on you.  If you decided to take legal action against me and even won the judgement but I have little to no money or assets then good luck getting the money from me.

Auto insurance is to protect you and others you may be liable to.  I hope this helps.
