Statistically young drivers present the greatest risk for a claim to an insurance carrier due to their inexperience behind the wheel. Young drivers are more likely to be involved in some sort of questionable or reckless activity. This does mean that every young driver is irresponsible or that they will be involved in activities that will cause a claim. Many young drivers are more responsible and less reckless than older drivers but insurance carriers tend to create rates based on age and geographic location as major factors.

This is not always the case there are some carriers that actually give you young driver discount and also if you have good grades that help. The main reason it is higher is because you are less experienced driver and are more likely to have an accident but there are many factors for this. Also the type of car you drive makes a difference also.

I insure a 17 yr old who is on her own policy and has had tickets and drives a 2 door car and with just liability is only  $160 a month that is not a bad rate as here in Montana the average young driver you can figures is 100 a month before you even think about adding a car this is being added to another policy. My recommendations are to talk to a local agent and see what type of discounts they offer for younger drivers and if you are being listed on another persons policy or not.

In California inexperienced drivers pay a higher premium than experienced drivers.  This extends to inexperienced drivers regardless of their age.  Statistically, drivers in this category have higher frequency and severity of claims.  The amount that is charged is linked to the actual experience of the insurance company.
