The cost of Critical Illness Insurance is based on the company from which it is purchased, the type of plan, the length of coverage, the state in which it is purchased, the amount of coverage, and the age and sex of the person purchasing it. A $100,000 benefit at age 40 averages about $100/mo for a 40 year old woman in the Midwest.

The premiums for Critical Illness Insurance depend on your age, gender, and smoking status. Rates in 2009 ranged from an average of $200 per year for a 40 year old nonsmoking male, for a lump sum benefit of $10,000.  At 50 years old, the average cost for that amount was $290. Cost per thousand went down as the benefit went up, so that the average rate for $50,000 for that same man was only $730 at age 40, rather than 5 times the $10,000 premium.
