The law varies from state to state regarding private disability insurance payments. If such payments are exempted from garnishment in your state, you should put those payments in a separate checking account. If they are mixed with your other funds, that checking account could be garnished.

If you owe child support or payment on bills, your disability insurance payments may be garnished.

I am not an attorney, but as far as I know a creditor cannot garnish disability benefits. The benefits should be protected under the privacy act. I know it to be true for Tennessee and some other states, but I can't confirm all 52 states. Verify with an attorney but I am confident the benefits are free from creditors.
