To get on a Disability Insurance policy that you purchase yourself, you apply for the policy with a Life Insurance agency. You will be be asked your personal information, your health information, your income and the type of job you have. The agent will be able to find your lowest price based on that, then will fill out your application with you. After it is submitted to the insurance company, you will be asked to do a paramed exam in your home and the insurance company may order your medical records. Once this is completed, you will hopefully be approved, and you will be told the final rate at which you were approved. The policy will be issued and you accept it by paying the first premium. You will receive a copy of your policy for your records.

The biggest recommendation is to interview independent agents who have access to the inventory of recognized disability companies who design their product line for consumer competitiveness. Once you secure your agent and the disability insurance company of choice, get at least one policy to protect your paycheck and another to protect your retirement contributions.
