Under the Affordable Care Act, coverage is available to everyone through various programs including the Health Insurance Marketplace which is a great place to start if you are unemployed whereas coverage is not available to you from an employer.

In addition, there are state programs that you may qualify for such as Medicaid. These programs are based on income eligibility, and you can see if you qualify and apply at your local Department of Health and Human Services office.

If you are unemployed due to a disability, you may qualify for Medicare, regardless of age, through the Social Security Administration. However, their definition of "disability" is much stricter than many other programs. You can apply by phone or in person at any local Social Security Office or online at ssa.gov.

Finally, many hospitals offer free or low cost health care based on income eligibility. They often follow a sliding-fee arrangement or offer free clinics for those in financial need. These clinics often provide care from volunteer doctors who are giving back to their community by offering care to those in need at no cost and are a great resource if you are in need of medical attention.
