Owner, Orange County Health & Life Insurance,
The most common types of health insurance are HMO's (Health Maintenance Organizations) and PPO's (Preferred Provider Networks). With HMO's, you have a primary doctor who refers you to specialists. Also, you must receive your care within the network except in emergencies. With PPO's, you can go directly to specialists. You can go outside of your network and still receive a benefit, but you receive more benefit if you stay within the network. There are also EPO's (Exclusive Provider Networks), which are basically like an HMO, except you can go directly to a specialist without a referral.
