How much does health insurance cost employers?  In the 25 years I have been in the insurance business the cost of health insurance has risen just about every year. When I began the cost of providing health insurance and other benefits to employees ran about 5% or less of payroll. In other words the cost of giving everybody health insurance was about equal to to 5% of the sum total of everyone's take home pay. Now nationally I believe that cost is around 15% of payroll today.
