In the era of ObamaCare, all you need to get health insurance is the ability to fog a mirror and make your monthly premium payments.  You also need to be a U.S citizen or legal resident.  Underwriting with medical questions is no longer allowed so it's really a matter of selecting a health insurance plan that you want and completing and submitting your enrollment form.  Please remember that the ability to purchase individual health insurance is now restricted to either; A) the annual open enrollment period which in 2014 begins on November 15th for an earliest effective date of coverage of January 1, 2015 or B) you experience a change of life status event such as getting married, divorced, having a child, losing other health insurance coverage and (this year) the renewal of your employer's group health plan can provide an opportunity to purchase individual health insurance coverage.
