    During a divorce the person listed as a spouse on the health insurance plan has the option of continuing group coverage under COBRA. The premium costs are often much higher for this option, as the employer contribution and pretax payroll deductions by the employee are lost.

    It may be more affordable to purchase a policy through a state exchange. There may be premium and cost sharing subsidies based upon income.
