I currently have Medicare A and B and a supplemental insurance plan. My fiance is younger and works with a group health insurance plan at her work. If we marry will I continue with Medicare as my primary insurance or will her insurance become my primary and what about a secondary?

Typically, when you're on original Medicare (Parts A & B) and you have a Medicare supplement (Medigap) plan, you will not need to have an additional health plan. Original Medicare (parts A & B) cover approximately 80% of your healthcare expenses - Medigap plans will pay all or a portion of the other 20%. If you have group coverage as well, you would be spending extra money on those premiums unnecessarily.

You can not be forced to go on her group health insurance if the two of you got married - it's only an available option for you.

If you have a Medicare supplement plan other than a plan F or plan G, I would recommend switching to one of those two plans before adding yourself to your fiance's group coverage - it would save you countless dollars by comparison. Plan F provides full coverage - every other plan provides good coverage, but you will share some of the expenses.

I would recommend consulting with an experienced independent Medigap broker who can review your specific situation and help you determine the best course of action.

I would also suggest reviewing the Medigap plan you currently have to see if there are better rates available (the plans are standardized meaning you regardless of which carrier it's through, the benefits are exactly the same - plan F from company A is the same as plan F from company B). Changing a Medigap plan can be completed at anytime during the year - you do not have to wait for the annual enrollment period like you would with prescription drug plans or Medicare advantage plans.

I hope the information is helpful - please feel free to contact me for assistance with your coverage (my background is in senior insurance) and if you have any further questions. Thanks very much.
