    The insurance company will cease coverage upon your request.  Your lender might not be so forgiving.  The lender usually has the right to place insurance on the home if you fail to provide insurance.  When the insurance company ceases coverage they are required to notify your lender.  Most homeowners are not pleased when this occurs.
