The amount you save varies by company, but it typically won't even pay for one month of service.  The reason to get a security system is for peace of mind not for an insurance discount.  That being said, regardless of how big or small the discount is, let you agent and/or company know that you have installed the alarm since you deserve the savings.

Typically, you should expect to receive a discount that represents somewhere around 10% on your Homeowners' premium.  You may find that it is necessary to have a burglary and fire alarm system installed in order to obtain insurance if you own or are buying a higher value custom home that also happens to be located in an area where fire services and water supplies are not readily available or in close proximity to your property.

Normally the discount is about 10% on your Homeowners' premium.

As Mary mentioned above, you get a home security system because you want or need one, I have one, and suggest it to my clients. Sometimes the home security sales pitch includes the insurance discount, just smile when they say that.
