To claim water damage with your homeowner's insurance, simply contact your company and explain to them that you have water damage and that you would like to file a claim. But one thing to keep in mind is that not every type of loss associated with water is covered by a homeowner's policy. Most water losses that are covered happen suddenly (burst pipe, washing machine overflow, etc.) and are not from slowly developing things (slow dripping pipe). Things like floods and tidal water are not covered under a homeowner's policy and require coverage from a separate flood insurance policy. The best thing you can do for a loss related to water is mitigate the damages as quickly as possible, and prevent any further damages from occurring. Thanks for asking!

Start by talking with your Insurance Professional about the coverage and limitations of your particular policy. Provide a good discription of the damage and if possible, the cause. I say if possible because while it is fairly easy to pin point a failed valve or pipe, it is harder to find the source of water that may have come in through the roof. Your Insurance Professional will be able to advise you about your deductible and help to report the loss to your Insurance Company. Your assigned Claims Professional will investigate the loss and determine coverage under the terms and conditions of your policy.
