There are many companies out there and each one of them can treat a claim differently if you are asking will my rate go up.  There are different types of claims that can trigger an automatic rate increase on renewal with most companies such as a water Claim (non flood), a theft or a fire.  Many companies do not increase premium if the claim is below a certain amount or threshold but you must check with your agent and carrier to be sure.

Weather claims in many cases do not trigger increase in premiums but you must check with your agent and company.  If you have a weather event and you are not sure if you have damage many roof and siding companies will come out and give you a free bid before you decide to call in the claim.  Call your agent and discuss with them the scenario and get advice so you can make a sound decision.  Most companies do not have a problem with a homeowner with 1 claim in 3 years, but if you have more than that you could be considered a habitual claimant (even though the claims may not have been in your control).

Find an agent or agency that you can trust and do not be afraid to ask questions that come to mind.  Do not find out if you have coverage for a claim after the fact and make sure your questions are answered.  Keep in mind that the insurance you are purchasing is to help protect you from a financial loss so ask questions, try to get the best package and coverage that fits your family needs and then look at price.
