Several insurance companies are operating in the US and there can be a big difference in coverage and service from one company to the next. Everyone wants to pay less for insurance but what you really need to focus on is getting the best value. Working with an independent agent is a great option because independent agents work with multiple companies, not just one. An independent agent provides value by explaining coverage options and gaps from each company as well as shopping for the best rate.

There are numerous 'Good Insurance Companies',  the best way to gauge this is to check the carrier's A.M. Best rating;  this is the industry standard rating agency which grades carriers based on their financial strength and customer service satisfaction based on a number of parameters inclusive of claims handling.

We caution clients that simply shop for the cheapest price and are not interested in the coverage purchased;  if a claim occurs, the same clients are those that are most unhappy with their decision and nothing can be done to remedy the situation.

We recommend purchasing all the coverage that the household needs and adjust the deductible based on the premium that the client wishes to pay.   Once you have a couple of quotes, it may be a good idea to visit:  http://www.ambest.com and check the carrier's rating prior to securing a new policy.

A 'good homeowners company' is one on which you can rely for responsiveness in the event that you incur a covered loss. Since carriers vary from State to State as to availability, check for the strongest ones financially, combined with dependable claims handling histories.
On your own, or with the assistance of an independent agent in your area, determine the A.M Best's financial rating of the carriers they recommend and that you want to consider. Contact more than one area agency to get several opinions. Then do some internet searches for their claims handling track records. A few obvious search terms will get you there.
