Call a local agent. If you don't know a local agent talk to your friends and family; ask for there recommendations. A local agent is your liaison with the insurance carrier. I would fair a guess that 90% plus of the local agents in your area handle homeowners insurance or if not will be able to provide you with information on someone that does.

Your best resource is your friends and family they can recommend a local agent also you can contact your states insurance commissioners office and they can tell you what carrier is allowed to sell  insurance in your state and also give you the average rate for the coverage you need. Also go and review the carrier and agency online and see what people are saying about the service and claims

Your state insurance commissioner has admitted a number of companies to offer homeowner’s insurance to customers in your state. He has deemed them able to meet their promises. The companies are represented by agents in your area. These agents can help you select appropriate coverage and prepare a policy that will satisfy you and your mortgage company.
