It depends upon the age of onset, whether it’s type 1 or 2, whether it’s managed with insulin, diet and exercise. But generally yes, you should be able to secure coverage, unless you also have additional complications like obesity and high blood, which can rate your condition or a declination. The key is to diabetic underwriting is management, taking care of yourself and receiving regular checkups to track your stability.

Can you get life insurance if you are diabetic?  Yes, you can, but a diabetic with excellent control at best could expect to pay a standard premium. While that sounds bad or not fair, when I began my insurance career 25 years ago the answer to this question was simply "no".  It has only been recent that insurance carriers began to offer policies to diabetics as diabetes is so unpredictable risk wise.

Most people who are diabetic can get some type of life insurance. If your A1C runs over 9.0, if you have neuropathy or proteinuria, or if you have heart disease in addition to diabetes, you may need to purchase a No Exam policy. Persons with well controlled diabetes without complications are usually insurable for a  medically underwritten policy of any amount and type of life insurance coverage they desire.
