Life insurance does cover death due to illness. It will pay the face amount upon the death of the insured person whether they passed from illness, accident, or old age.

Life insurance does not cover expenses associated with having illness while still alive, unless the life insurance policy has a "living benefit" feature or rider designed to cover certain types of illness.
