    There are several methods that life insurance companies can use to tell if you smoke. Not all of these are used when applying for every policy.

    1) They will ask about tobacco use on the application.
    2) They will test for nicotine/cotinine in the blood, urine, and/or saliva
    3) They will ask about tobacco use in a phone interview
    4) They will look at medical records to see if you are a smoker.
