    Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance pays the face amount to the beneficiary only when death is caused by accident, such as a car crash or falling down stairs. It will also pay for loss of limbs.

    Life Insurance pays the face amount to the beneficiary when death is caused by illness, injury, old age, or any cause. There may be some stipulations, such as the suicide exemption during the first two years. But as a rule, Life Insurance pays upon loss of life. Period.
