    Life insurance companies generally say that it can take two months to process a claim. If everything goes well, this time can be much shorter. If the death claim form is filled out incorrectly or there are other sticking points, it could take longer than that. State Departments of Insurance regulate this, so insurance companies are compelled to make death claims processing a top priority.

    You need to have everything together to start the death claim process. Be sure you have your life insurance company's death claim form and a certified copy of the death certificate. There are certainly differences in life carriers, but once everything is received with no issues you can expect 3 weeks to about 8 weeks to receive your benefits. If the death occurs within the first two years of the policy, known as the contestability period, this can add several weeks to the process as usually an investigation will be implemented. Also, if death occurs under homicide or mysterious circumstances benefits can be held up for a significant period of time. It is a good idea to have your trusted advisor or agent involved to help the process along while you are going through the grieving process.
