    The income of life and health insurance agents probably follows the Pareto principle: twenty percent of the producers make eighty percent of the income. That leaves eighty percent chasing after a small slice of the pie. Many people get started selling insurance, burn out, and then move on to another field. 

    Most producers are paid strictly by commission - a percentage of the annual premium sold. Commission rates vary by carrier and type of policy sold.
