The only way to get life insurance on an ex-husband is to get your ex to agree to sign the life insurance application as the Insured. If he will not pay for it, you can pay for the policy as long as there is an insurable interest for you to have life insurance on him (e.g. you have minor children together). Or you might try to get it as part of an alimony agreement.

To obtain a policy on an Ex Spouse you will have to establish a financial hardship would occur should the Ex suddenly become deceased. So if the Ex is still providing finances to you or children this would constitute a reason for the life insurance. The Ex may be willing or in some cases be ordered by the court as part of the divorce agreement.

Depending on your divorce and how it has panned out. The ex spouse may see the need to have life insurance to provide protection when kids are involved. They may not, see a need at all and that would be where you petition the court and let the court decide the need for him.
