Buying online life insurance can be safe or not. Be sure you are on a secured website (https). Here is the real issue with putting your personal information online. The majority of "shopping" life insurance websites are "lead" companies. These companies sell your information to life insurance agents all over the country to sell you a policy. It is not uncommon for unsuspecting consumers to receive 40 phone calls and emails per day for weeks. it is really hard to stop. I suggest asking family, friends and coworkers for referrals to life agents in your area. Use someone you know and trust to purchase a product this important.

That is an excellent question! Honestly, I really don't believe so, and I'll tell you why. The first reason is that you don't have any idea who you are speaking with, and whether they will be there if you need them. Maybe I'm old school, but if I'm going to be giving someone my money and expecting them to be a part of protecting my family, I want to know them. I don't trust giving my family to a faceless, impersonal website. The second is the security of my personal information - who sees it, how well is it protected, and how do I know where it went? With the rate that companies seem to be hacked, I think I prefer knowing my stuff is locked in a cabinet somewhere vs. floating around in cyberspace, available to whomever. The third reason is that the internet prices shown to lure you in are "best scenario" prices always - they are the worm on the hook, and far too often aren't what your price is after they've underwritten the policy. With a live agent, that is much less likely to happen. Can it be safe to buy online? Probably. Would I personally do it? No. I hope that helps, thanks for asking!

I can see we have some conflicting opinions here, which is healthy!

I cannot imagine that there are any life insurance companies who do not use computers to store their data about their customers, in this day and age. They are able to protect it through elaborate security measures.

In the same way, online agencies can employ top notch security measures to protect their clients' information. E.g. In our office, the security is set up for multiple businesses, and our IT is extremely advanced. You should take safety into consideration when buying online.

You should also take into consideration the credentials of the agent you are working with. Many online agents are working out of offices and simply using the internet to give their customers what they want: a convenient way to do business. People do not have to sacrifice safety, good service, and helpful professional advice to shop for life insurance online. They just have to select the right websites.
