is life insurance part of a will?  In most cases NO, as life insurance is a separate thing that works outside of probate and a will. Life insurance pays to a stated beneficiary directly, it doesn't need to go through probate or be included in a will. That said, you can make the will your beneficiary and put it through probate if you so choose.

Life insurance benefits may be included in a will if it is included as part of an estate as in the case of a trust. Whole life insurance is largely used to create or enhance an estate so that there is an inheritance to be passed on to heirs. So in some cases an estate will be named as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, and then it could be that the will of the owner of the estate will name a recipient for the proceeds of the life insurance.
