Life insurance for basic final expense can be purchased as a unit rider or even a stand alone policy. Some advisers use permanent life insurance to fund college education and/or sometimes jump start a child'd's retirement fund. But many insurance agents sell life insurance on children to establish coverage in case coverage is not obtainable later in life.

As with all insurance, it is worth it if the need arises. The unthinkable happened to our family when I was a child, and my mom said that the life insurance policy on my sister was a big help. If she would have survived, my sister would have had that policy to hold onto for the rest of her life despite her cancer history. This personal reason for getting life insurance on kids is not one that I've expressed before. But obviously, it's one that I think about.
