    Yes, and no.

    You are not required to be receiving your Social Security checks in order to be covered by Medicare, but you (or your qualifying spouse) must have had SS wages to qualify for Medicare in most cases.

    If you (or your spouse) do not have enough SS wage quarters you may buy in to Medicare Part A.
