As a general rule, Medicare only pays about 80% of approved Part A and Part B claims.

The Medicare Part A deductible for 2013 is $1184. If you did not have a Medigap plan you would be responsible for paying this before Medicare pays a dime.

The Medicare Part B deductible for 2013 is $147. This is your responsibility unless you had a Medicare supplement plan that pays that deductible. After the deductible is satisfied, Medicare pays 80% of the claim and you are responsible for the other 20%.
