    The Medicare Social Security tax must be paid on all income. The rates for 2013 are as follows:

    Employees: 1.45%
    Employers: 1.45%
    Self-Employed: 2.9%

    If an individual's earned income is over $200,000 they must pay 0.9% more in Medicare tax. Married couples filing jointly with an income over $250,000 must also pay an additional 0.9% Medicare tax in addition to the percentages noted above.
