A Medicare levy surcharge is a tax on Australians that earn over a certain amount and don’t have private health insurance hospital cover. This surcharge provides health coverage for you and your dependents, including your spouse, any of your children who are under 21 years of age, or any of your student children who are under 25 years of age. T he surcharge is in addition to the Medicare Levy of 1.5%, which is paid by most Australian taxpayers, and is calculated at the rate of 1% to 1.5% of your income.
