It is really a matter of what coverage you have with your medical insurance. Comparing your current coverage and out of pocket exposure to what is available with medicare and a supplemental plan would be the best way to determine which route it best for you.

I find that if you are covered on a spouse's plan and your premium is several hundred dollars per month and you have a considerable deductible, opting for medicare and a supplement may be a no brainer. Find a broker who can help you compare your options.

As you approach the age at which you are eligible for Medicare, the government will inform you of the date that Medicare will start. You can contact Medicare and ask them to delay your enrollment if you have health insurance provided by an employer. However, you must start it yourself when that insurance ceases. Many group insurance programs require that you have Medicare and often require that you have Medicare Part B.
