Tubal ligation is not covered by Medicare if the procedure is performed simply for sterilization, and the desire to have no more children. If the tubal ligation is done to cure another health condition, or to alleviate the symptoms of another general health condition, then it can be covered by Medicare Part A or B.

Generally Medicare will not cover Vasectomy or Tubal Ligation unless an underlying illness makes it Medically necessary. Medicare considers it an elective surgery. Medicaid, however does cover Tubal Ligation so if an individual who is eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare gets the procedure Medicaid will pay the claim in most cases.
