A Medigap policy covers "gaps" that Medicare does not cover. Some examples include deductibles, coinsurance and copays. Each contract must adhere to both Federal and State laws. Also, they must be clearly marked as "Medicare Supplement Insurance."

There are other benefits that some Medigap plans will cover such as medical treatment outside the US.

Private health insurance companies issue these policies and typically rates are very affordable. They are available through brokers and also reputable websites online that can provide quotes from multiple carriers.

Any claim approved by original Medicare is a covered item under your Medigap plan. Keep in mind that only plan F reimburses all approved Medicare Part A and Part B claims. Other Medigap plans (A through N, except for F) will cover everything but may not reimburse for Medicare deductibles or coinsurance.
