Medigap Plan N is one of the 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans.

Medigap Plan N covers 100% of the following:
Medicare Part A Coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used up.
Medicare Part B Coinsurance (except for a co-pay of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 co-pay for an emergency room visit -- waived if admitted).
    Blood (first 3 pints)
Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance or Co-pay
    Skilled Nursing Facility Care Coinsurance
    Medicare Part A deductible
Foreign Travel Emergency (Up to Plan Limits)

Medigap Plan N DOES NOT cover the following:
    Medicare Part B deductible ($147 in 2014)
Medicare Part B Excess Charges (if the amount a provider is legally permitted to charge is higher than the Medicare approved amount, the difference is the excess charge).

Medigap Plan N is used by many Medicare Beneficiaries, but it does fall short in not covering Excess Charges. It is important to be aware of how Excess Charges can be charged to you by a provider who does not accept assignment.

You may wonder why anyone would bother with Plan N if they have to worry about Excess Charges. The premium for Plan N is often the reason why people choose it.

Medigap Plan N is one of ten standardized plans offers coverage in addition to the standard benefits provided by other Medicare Supplement plans. It is most simiiar to Medigap Plan D, with two major exceptions. With N, you are responsible for a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to a $50 copayment for emergency room visits that don't result in inpatient admission before your Part B coverage being paying expenses at 100%.

Basic benefits offered by Plan N include:

Medicare Part A hospital coinsurance and other costs up to an additional 365 days after Original Medicare benefits are exhausted
Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayments (except for a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to a $50 copayment for emergency room visits that do not result in inpatient care)
First three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
Plan N also offers the following additional benefits:

Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) care coinsurance
    Medicare Part A deductible
Foreign travel emergency care (up to plan limits)

When available, many consumers find they can save $50 per month or more when compared to the more popular Plan F. If your doctor accepts Medicare assignment as payment in full, and you do not see your physician more than twice per month, Plan N can be a great way to lower your overall health care expenses.
