Renters Insurance is one of the most cost effective insurance plans available.  Typical policies that my agency writes are in the $12 to $15 per month range.  There are several factors that can increase or decrease a policy premium, such as the amount of personal property coverage required, if the applicant is a smoker or not, if the applicant owns specific animal breeds, if there is a swimming pool and if it is fenced or not, the claims history of the applicant, and several other factors.
There are also a wide range of discounts that can be applied depending on how many policies the insured has with the same insurance company (auto, home, life, business, etc.), in some cases the education and/or employment type can also generate a discount.
I highly recommend obtaining at least 2 or 3 quotes, and not just purchasing based on the lowest price.  Make sure you understand what you are purchasing and how the coverage works against the other policies.  Just because one policy is less expensive than another doesn't mean it is a better purchase.
