A person can be required to get renters insurance as part of the lease agreement.  This requirement helps protect landlords in the case of fire or other disaster.  The landlord is not responsible for damage to the contents of the property, but many renters assume they are.  A landlord that allows renters to have pets may require renters insurance in case of dog bites.  Not maintaining renters insurance would be a violation of the lease agreement and be terms for eviction.
Renters insurance is a good purchase for anyone as the cost is very low for the amount of coverage received.  This will protect your property in  the case of fire or theft.
