Renters Insurance is NOT a legal requirement however that does not mean it is not required to move into an apartment or house.  The landlord can and usually does make this a requirement which protects you from loss of your material possessions in the event of a fire or other catastrophic event covered.

Be sure to look at your options on the Renters Insurance.  I recommend getting the replacement value type of coverage v. current value.  Think about what it will cost to replace items like your TV (versus what it is currently worth), your mattress and other bedroom furniture, etc.
