Actually the most important part of a renter's insurance policy, in my opinion, is the liability protection it provides.  Personal injuries can occur and the loss can be substantial.  Most people buy a renter's policy to replace the contents of their home.  I recommend the contents be photographed, inventoried and a resonable estimate of the cost of replacement be made, then apply for the coverage.  It is usually, quite inexpensive.
