A renter's policy is the same as a homeowner's policy except that it does not cover the building itself.  You should have largely the same expectations from a renter's policy as you would a homeowner's policy.

So in the event of a covered claim you could be compensated for your physical loss of possessions as well as extra living expenses associated with having to move after the claim.

Renter's policies also provide liability coverage to you and your family.  This is very broad coverage that could cover anything from slip and trip exposures around the house to certain misfortunes that happen away from home as well.  Talk to your broker to find out everything a renter's policy covers and what endorsements you need.
